An Erasmus+ project on gender equality
In the world and our society
In spite of equal access to education and good academic performances of women, key positions in society are still mainly occupied by men.
Women in these positions often testify about the struggle to get to these positions, to maintain them, to be considered equal by their colleagues and respected by their subordinates.
Media reports on male politicians, CEO’s, celebrities etc. behaving disrespectfully to women or making statements to the public suggesting male superiority.
E.g. the METOO movement is a respond to this.
More women over men live in poverty (data EU government): fewer opportunities on job market, pay gap, more often considered responsible for family life and taking care of children, more often temporary jobs or part-time work,
less certainty of employment.
Women & girls more often become victim of violence and/or experience feelings of unsafety and insecurity.
Decreased tolerance in general & based upon gender.
At school
A decrease in self-esteem and self-confidence and an increase in problems such as performance anxiety, far more often the case for girls over boys.
Girls are more often not encouraged at home to study, more often engaged in household tasks and/or taking care of siblings.
Girls are more often not encouraged by their home environment to fully participate in society.
Increase in disrespectful behavior, intolerance and bullying, esp. through social media
Growing tendency to focus on personal rights and opinions, not (sufficiently) taking into account the rights and feelings of others
Growing complexity of the society, with unclear reference frame of values and increased influences e.g. by media
In spite of governmental campaigns, girls often choose very traditionally. This means education/jobs with lower pay rates and social status.
Even if the girls are doing better at school in terms of academic results, boys are often more confident in
spontaneous communication in English and show a greater ability to learn new digital skills.
